Church Highlight: Declare Church – Maumee, OH

Pastors Phil & Meredith Ryburn

Declare Church, located in Maumee, Ohio, stands as one of the most influential non-denominational churches in Northwest Ohio. Founded in June 1986 by Michael Pitts and his wife Kathi Pitts, the church known as Cornerstone Church then, began with humble roots when the couple relocated from Lima, Ohio, with a vision to plant a life-giving, Spirit-led congregation. Their first service drew just 35 people, yet the church experienced rapid growth over the following years, moving multiple times before establishing a permanent campus in Maumee. By the mid-2000s, Cornerstone had grown into one of the largest churches in the region, with thousands of weekly attendees and a reputation for dynamic worship and multicultural community impact.

From its earliest days, Cornerstone Church distinguished itself through a commitment to racial unity, vibrant worship, and innovative ministry expression. Under Michael Pitts’ leadership, later recognized as a bishop within the charismatic movement, the church expanded its reach beyond a single location. It launched multiple campuses, developed a global network of affiliated churches, and became known for hosting large conferences and outreach initiatives. Ministries within the church included children’s environments, youth programs, creative arts, and extensive local and global outreach efforts such as community events, missions partnerships, and service initiatives designed to meet practical needs.

As the church matured, leadership transitioned into a new generation. Phil and Meredith Ryburn. Meredith being the daughter of Michael and Kathi Pitts—emerged as key leaders within the ministry. Having been raised within the life and culture of Cornerstone, Meredith Ryburn carried forward the vision and spiritual DNA established by her parents, alongside her husband Phil Ryburn. Together, they became lead pastors, stepping into the responsibility of guiding the church into its next season. Their leadership reflects a continued emphasis on Spirit-led ministry, strong teaching, and a desire to engage a new generation with clarity and purpose.

In recent years, this new season was marked by a significant rebranding, as Cornerstone Church transitioned to the name Declare Church. This change represents both continuity and renewal—honoring the church’s legacy while casting fresh vision for the future. The name “Declare” reflects a renewed focus on boldly proclaiming the message of Jesus, equipping believers, and expanding influence both locally and beyond. Under Phil and Meredith Rayburn’s leadership, the church continues to build on its strong foundation, fostering a culture of worship, discipleship, and outreach that remains central to its identity.

Today, Declare Church carries forward nearly four decades of ministry impact that began with a small gathering in 1986. From its founding by Michael and Kathi Pitts to its current leadership, the church’s story is one of steady growth, generational transition, and ongoing mission. Rooted in faith and shaped by visionary leadership, it continues to serve as a spiritual home for many while influencing churches and communities far beyond Maumee, Ohio.
