Church Highlight: Charleston Church – Charleston, ME

Charleston Church, nestled in the heart of Charleston, Maine, has been a pillar of spiritual life and community outreach since its founding in 1997. Originally launched by a small group of believers seeking authentic, Bible-based fellowship, the church quickly grew under a shared passion for gospel-centered teaching and genuine care for one another. Over the years, Charleston Church has evolved into one of Maine’s largest multi-generational congregations, now meeting in several regional campuses.

Since April 2000, Matt Ward has served as Senior Pastor, alongside his wife Darcy Ward as the Care Pastor—together providing holistic leadership for both spiritual direction and congregational well‑being. Pastor Matt steers the congregation’s vision toward heartfelt worship, discipling communities, and outreach initiatives such as the Safe Place Food Pantry and Epic Kids ministry. Meanwhile, Darcy brings warmth and compassion to her care-focused role, attending to individuals’ spiritual and emotional needs. In 2015, Matt’s leadership extended beyond the church when he was appointed President of Faith Bible College in Charleston, Maine, further illustrating their deep commitment to education and ministry.

Under the Ward’s nurturing leadership, Charleston Church emphasizes a vision often summarized by three guiding phrases: “Find Hope, Get Direction, Make a Difference.” These pillars reflect their mission to introduce individuals to hope in Christ, guide them toward spiritual maturity, and inspire them to impact their families, workplaces, and communities positively.

Matt and Darcy Ward bring rich personal backgrounds to their roles. Matt, who became senior pastor at just 28, has since grown the church both spiritually and numerically. His presidency at Faith Bible College highlights his dedication to training future leaders. Darcy, formerly involved in children’s and family ministry, offers stability and empathy as she supports congregants through pastoral care and healing ministry. The couple resides in nearby Corinth, Maine, and share in the joy of family life with their three adult children and grandchildren.

As Charleston Church looks toward the future, it remains anchored in its founding values—Bible teaching, heartfelt worship, and transformative service. Whether gathering on Sundays, staffing community outreach programs, or engaging in small-group discipleship, the congregation is committed to being a beacon of hope and transformation in Maine. The Wards’ 25 years of leadership, celebrated in April last year, stand testimony to a growing legacy of faithfulness, compassion, and impact
