Nestled in Sterling, Illinois, Abiding Word Church stands today as a vibrant example of how a local congregation—with humble beginnings—can grow into a regional hub for faith, community, and vision. Its mission is simple yet profound: Love God, Love People, Serve the World. From the earliest days, the leadership has emphasized a “regional family church” model, teaching the Word of Faith and believing that the “spirit of faith is caught” just as much as it is taught. Their values—Grow, Go, Give, Connect, Serve—offer a practical roadmap for life together in Christ.The church was established in the mid-1980s (with founding pastor Jim Evans preceding the current leadership). In 1988, when Evans stepped down, Scott Porter accepted the call and became senior pastor, taking over what was at that time a struggling congregation meeting in an aging building. Over time, the church expanded, built a new facility on a 32-acre lot, and continuously added ministries, infrastructure, and outreach.

At the heart of Abiding Word’s momentum are Scott and Terri Porter, whose leadership breathes life into this mission. Scott Porter is a graduate of Rhema Bible Training (class of 1986), and he immediately returned to serve in his community in youth, children, and associate ministry before taking full pastoral leadership. Over decades, he has pursued the conviction that the local church must be deeply rooted in the Spirit, responsive to its context, and unafraid to “make no small plans.” Under his leadership the church launched substantial expansions, crafted ministries for all ages, and cultivated cultural relevance in the Sterling region and beyond.

Terri Porter works as co-pastor and brings complementary passion and strength to the ministry vision. She is known for her heart to see people changed by God’s Word, to serve others, and to cultivate environments where women and families can experience renewal. Together, Scott and Terri lead not just as pastors but as mission partners, modeling how marriage, family, and ministry can coexist with purpose.
