19 May The Great Commission by Joy Handley
It can seem so daunting that Jesus told us to go into all the world! I think most people focus on that, but if you look closely He gave us authority that was tri-fold. In Matthew 28:18-19 (ESV) it says, “And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[a] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,”
Jesus told His disciples all authority has been given to Him therefore go! He didn’t just tell them what to do, but if you look close you see how He told them to go, in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. He didn’t just say that to sound theological but to tell them howto go and with the authority to go. Jesus didn’t just call us to go, but He equipped us to go.
The Father: the father means favor, father’s blessing, special benefit, upholding. Psychology tells us that children gain their self-confidence through their father, and I believe the kingdom of God is not different. God gives us our confidence so Jesus told us to go in confidence knowing our Father is upholding us with favor, special benefits with His blessing. Because of who my dad is, there are times when I use His name, David Swann, to get favor or special blessings with others because His name holds power, and that’s just like our Heavenly Father. When we “go therefore” we go with the power that is our Father’s name.
The Son: Jesus came to save us, that word save in the Hebrew is sozo, which means full salvation through healing, restoration, redemption. Jesus encapsulated grace, love, salvation, and redemption. Just like the woman at the well, He didn’t condemn her but called her out of sin and into salvation, which is what He does for everyone. The Bible tells us Jesus moved with compassion and love. In His name we bring sozo in our ministry and service. In His name we call people out of their sin into salvation with the love of Jesus flowing out of us.
The Holy Spirit: the Holy Spirit in the Hebrew is the word dynamis which means power, strength, and boldness. When Jesus gave us authority in the name of the Holy Spirit, He gave us power, strength, and boldness to make disciples. The Holy Spirit also brings spiritual gifts that enable us to make disciples in unique and beautiful ways.
In 1 Corinthians 12:4-6, it echoes this same thing, “Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.”
All authority (all power, all service/ministry, all gifts) in heaven and earth have been given so go therefore in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit!
I am not only Joy, but I am a child of God and all authority has been given to me. I am clothed in favor, full of grace, love, and power. I have the sea-splitting, dead-raising, King of all Kings upholding me! You might just see Joy, but I am a child of God and all authority has been given to me so I will go into all the world and preach the Gospel in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit!
Prayer: Jesus, thank you for not just calling us, but equipping us. Help me to walk in the authority and power of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Today let me walk in confidence in ministry and service with power and gifts that come from you. I love you with all my heart and I’ll serve you all the days of my life. In Jesus Name, Amen.
